Workshop Descriptions:

1A/2A Strategies for Language Acquisition for Core & Immersion Program - Dorothy Lazore
The workshop focuses on methods for teaching and assisting students to speak and retain language. Well-known Mohawk language teacher, Dorothy Lazore presents ways to incorporate Total Physical Response and other teaching strategies into language programs for all ages.

1B/2B Language Program Administration Made Simple - Robert Matthew
     This workshop focuses on program planning and funding for language initiatives. Participants will review samples of grants and proposals and will be shown strategies on how to flourish in times of funding scarcity.

1C/2C Extension Activities for TPR: Games, Songs, and Activities - Janice E. Billy
     Prepare to move, groove, and have some fun! In this energetic workshop, Chief Atahm School immersion teacher Janice Billy links language learning to whole body learning. She will demonstrate how to connect TPR to other forms of learning.

1D/2D Siseyse: Early Childhood Language Website & Puppet Show - CAS Curriculum Team
     This workshop highlights the creative work from the Chief Atahm School curriculum team. The newly designed early childhood language learning website and puppet show series will be presented. The puppeteers and web designers will be on hand to display their talents.

3A/4A Ua Lawa Makou i ka Pohaku: University of Hawaii Language Immersion Program - Ho’okulaiwi: ‘Aha Ho’ona’auao ‘Oiwi
  This panel of Hawaiian educators will discuss the initiatives at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The Kula Kaiapuni Hawai’i program supports and retains teachers in the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program. Special attention will be given to what worked and what didn’t work for students and strategies for improving existing structures.

3B/4B Restorying First Nations Languages: Planning for Language Power - Kathryn Michel
     This workshop shares the research into the history of Chief Atahm School. Kathryn Michel, one of the co-founders of the school, shares the stories of the school’s early challenges and successes. Strategies to support and sustain momentum in community language program development will be discussed.

3C/4C Oral Language Assessment through Stories - Dr. Jack Miller/Stacey Michel
     This workshop focuses on the development and delivery of a joint research project between Chief Atahm School and Thompson Rivers University. The SPINS for Stories pilot project, using simple stories to assess oral fluency in language students will be shared.

3D/4D Use Today’s Technology to Create Language Resources - Mike Willie
       Learn how to create language learning CDs using audio recorders and computers. You will gain basic knowledge about how to record Elders/fluent speakers and then import the files into the computer for basic editing. Participants will learn how to upload sound files and do basic editing for CD creation and distribution. Use of iPods and iPads are also discussed.

5B/6B Shaping Speech Through Simple Stories - Janice E.Billy
     Learn a storying process that incorporates features of Classic TPR and TPR Storytelling. Janice will share her classroom experience with guiding beginner speakers to new levels of communication. This process involves the use of graphics, questionning techniques, games, and activities.

5C/6C Creative Exploration of Your Language Dreams - Stacey Michel
     This hands on workshop presents a process towards creating a physical mind-map that focuses on language goals. Immersion teacher Stacey Michel lead participants through an artistic exploration into their inner worlds.

5D/6D Supporting Staff Language Development - Kathryn Michel
     This workshop highlights successful strategies used at Chief Atahm School to support the language development of non-fluent teaching staff. Kathryn will focus on planning and scheduling of staff immersion retreats and language classes.
